2021 Citroen DS 9 Luxury Car Review
10 Jun 2021
As far as luxury executive cars go, DS Automobiles has never been at the top of the list but the launch of the new DS 9 could change all of that. The new full-sized saloon is the new business car that moves away from the company's current SUV style. France's upstart premium brand hopes that it will shade its German rivals in comfort and elegance.
In this review, we will look at what the new DS 9 has to offer, how it compares to its alternative German executive car rivals and what our thoughts are on the new saloon.
Is the new DS 9 a serious rival for the likes of BMW 5 Series and Audi A6? Let’s find out together...
DS Overview
In the past, DS hasn’t been the biggest car brand in the UK. With the arrival of the DS 9 and the previously launched 4, there seems to be a determination from the brand to expand in the UK.
The first car to sport a DS badge was back in 1955 and, at the time, it was a sleek car with clever hydropneumatic suspension designed to give you a super-smooth ride. It almost feels like DS should have released a luxury saloon long before now as it suits them so well. Luckily, with the launch of the DS 9 saloon, we’re seeing the car brand return to its luxury roots.
Jules Tilstone, the DS UK managing director has said…
“When you're a challenger brand, and you've got someone looking between the beautifully specced DS 9 and another car in its competitor set which is much more modest, then clearly it's a good reason for someone to choose DS. But it's not going to be a car you choose because leasing is more competitive”
What is the DS 9 like inside?
The interior of the DS 9 is sleek and striking. There are features such as heated, cooled and massaging seats, soft leather upholstery and a 14-speaker sound system. You can even control the 12.3in display screen with crystal-shaped touch-sensitive buttons.
One noticeable aspect of the DS 9 is that it has been designed to have a very comfortable suspension. Active Scan Suspension has been used in the design which uses a camera to 'read' the road ahead to prepare the damping of each wheel (something that would be appreciated along the bumpy UK roads).
A unique new feature from the DS brand is that drivers can now personalise their cars through design packs. For example, there are models that come with grained leather seats and models come with nappa leather trim.
Along with the sleek design, the DS 9 has managed to include safety features such as autonomous parking, a night vision mode and driver attention monitoring.
Our verdict
We are excited by the prospect of DS becoming a big player in the executive car range. The French car is definitely one for those who want to drive something a little different to everyone else. There is no better time to invest in DS as the 9 saloon is the best DS yet! It delivers on comfort, refinement and fuel economy and even offers more standard equipment than most BMW’s or Audi’s. With the promise of the DS 9 being a cheap car to lease, it has the potential to expand far and wide across the UK.
