Three diesel and two petrol engines are available and the Peugeot 5008 performance varies depending on your choice. The petrol versions – both 1.6 litre – have 120 and 156 bhp and can do the sprint from 0-62 mph in 12.3 and 9.7 seconds respectively. There are two 2.0 HDi diesel engines – with 150 bhp or 163 bhp. The former makes 0-62 mph in 10 seconds, aided by its six speed manual gearbox; the latter (only available with an automatic gearbox) takes just 0.5 seconds longer. There is also a 1.6 HDi producing 115 bhp.

The Peugeot 5008 is a delight both to drive and to be driven in. It purrs along with the minimum of exterior or engine noise; the seats are comfortable and supportive and apart from a bit of agro on the worst of pot holes the suspension really does its job. Dynamic roll control comes with all models and reduces body roll on bends very effectively. The steering is light but accurate and there is plenty of grip. It’s comfortable and enjoyable on long journeys and must be up there with the best of its class. All in all the Peugeot 5008’s handling is very impressive for this class of car.

Peugeot have moved on with the design of the 5008. The large grille has given way to something smaller and more stylish; neat LED rear lights, sharp lines and a chrome shoulder line complete the pleasing new image.

The Peugeot 5008 interior is designed to impress; with a smart, high gloss black trim, white dials and chrome and leather accessories. The user-friendly electronic handbrake frees up enough space to be replaced by a large storage bin. There are seven individual seats, the middle row of which tilt, slide and fold flat independently, offering a good variety of both legroom and stowage. At its maximum there is 2,506 luggage space in the Peugeot 5008 – this is with all rear seats stowed. The Peugeot 5008 can seat five adults and two children comfortably – on short journeys two adults could sit in the rear two seats, but they would need to get on very well together! With all seven seats in use, though, storage is greatly reduced and there is not really room for any more than a few carrier bags to be packed.

The Peugeot 5008 comes in three trims – the Active, the Sport and the Exclusive. The (entry level) Active comes complete with 16 inch wheels, CD player, electric front windows, air conditioning and a leather steering wheel. Upgrade to the Sport and you will also get alloys, cruise control, lighting pack, under-seat storage and front fog lights. Make the final leap up to the Exclusive trim and you will get a wonderful panoramic glass roof, auto headlights and wipers, parking sensors, folding mirrors, head-up display, tyre pressure sensors, window blinds, USB and Bluetooth, dual zone climate control and 17 inch alloys – that’s a lot of extras and worth aiming for if you can manage it.

Unsurprisingly, the Peugeot 5008 safety is good. It is a five star winner in the European NCAP tests; amongst other features it boasts, along with front and side airbags, curtain airbags which run the full length of the cabin. Peugeot have not historically had a brilliant record for reliability, but the 5008 does seem to have come a long way to put this right. The head-up display, showing speed and distance is an additional safety feature in the Exclusive trim; and security features include deadlocks, marked parts and an integrated stereo system.

Buying & Owning4/5

The Peugeot 5008 is reasonably priced for a car in this class, and the diesel engines, in particular, are economical to run. They offer somewhere in the range of 41 – 55 mpg; although the petrol engines are rather less easy on the wallet at 38-39 mpg. The car falls in the more economical insurance groups and CO2 emissions are fairly low. Selling on in the second hand market should not present too much difficulty when the time comes; not too much to complain about here.
