Are Self Driving Cars The Near Future?
5 Oct 2020
We all remember those science fiction movies that showed us the idea of cars that would just take us where we wanted to go whilst we sat back and relaxed. It was a dream that so many of us had after that, and it kept getting reinforced by all of the movies that came out later.
In recent years, engineers across the world have been trying to make this dream into a reality, with improvements to technology constantly helping them along the way. But it does beg the question; will Self Driving Cars be available in the near future, or do we have a long time to wait?
The Dream Behind The Possible Reality
It was TV shows and movies such as Total Recall and Minority Report that first put the idea of self driving cars into the hearts and minds of so many people. The idea of having a vehicle that could safely take you on your journey without you having to be directly involved was wonderful. All the stress of dealing with other drivers would be lost to memory as everyone would be taken around by these robotic vehicles.
Even things like the morning school run would be easier as the cars would do all of the hard work. It would be amazing, wouldn’t it?
That’s why so many engineers at companies like Google and other businesses are trying to make them happen. However, there are a number of challenges that they are facing at the moment which are making things trickier.
The Challenges of Self Driving Cars
The first big challenge for the self driving cars really is the safety aspect of them. After all, the onboard computers need to be able to understand and predict movements of other drivers at the moment. If every car on the road were a self driving car, it would likely be easier for a computer to predict the entirely logic-based movements of other computer-controlled vehicles.
However, we don’t think like computers. There are so many things that affect the way we drive at any given time, meaning it can be difficult for a computer to predict what we are going to do.
On top of this, there have been a few strange mishaps with things like laser pens messing up the navigation systems in the past. So, for now, it certainly seems like we are a long way off having self-driving cars become the normal mode of transportation.
What Does The Future Hold?
With all this in mind, there is definitely a move towards a self-driving future, but it is impossible to accurately predict when it will happen. So for now, we have to settle for the amazing advancements in electric cars to quench our thirst for technological advancement in cars.
So, why not take a look at what electric cars you can get your hands on for now? If you are worried about the price, you could always take a look at the various car lease deals available here to see what you can get!
